한국에 대해 알고 싶으면 꼭 들어야 할 팟캐스트

한국에 대해 잘 모르는 외국 국적 분들에게 추천하고 싶은 팟캐스트 에피소드가 있어요.

저자 Tim Ferriss와 한국계 미국인 투자자 Steve Jang이 한국에 대해 이야기하는 2시간 반의 팟캐스트 에피소드인데요.

K-pop이나 K-drama처럼 한국 콘텐츠가 세계적으로 인기를 얻은 이유, 한국 특유의 ‘한’, ‘정’, 그리고 ‘눈치’, 계층간 갈등 등 여러 주제에 대해 재미있게 들었습니다.

그 에피소드 중에서도 와닿고 여러분도 쓸 만한 영어 문장을 몇 개 뽑아서 소개하겠습니다! 

1. 한국이 최근이 될 때까지 많이 인기가 없었던 이유 – 11:20부터

Korea was a developing country. From 1905 to 1945, it was annexed and colonized by Japan. It was an oppressed state. And then the Korean War happened. The country split into two. Not a country you’d want to visit. But it had the fastest rate of economic growth in three decades. What happened after that was an industrial country, but it was still rough. But it started to change in the 80s when drama and music became something very unique, and not something that’s formulaic of other countries. The 90s was when K-pop really started to become a thing and expanded outward.

2. 1998년의 남북이산가족의 만남 – 40:40부터

It’s not a relief of trauma. It’s a new trauma on top of a long-standing trauma. Imagine if you have an opportunity to be reunited for an hour and separated. Is that cathartic, or is that actually more trauma?

여러분, 1998년 김대중 정부 시기에 남북에 흩어진 가족들이 몇십 년 만에 재회한 이산가족 만남 기억하시나요? 나중에 저도 녹화 영상을 보면서 눈물이 나왔는데요.

🔖 “catharsis (카타르시스)”는 그리스어 어원의 단어로 정화나 마음의 해방을 의미합니다. 감동적인 소설을 읽으면 마음이 풀리고, 힘든 일상에 다시 돌아가더라도 잘 대처할 수 있는 느낌이에요. 안타깝게도 Steve말로는 한 시간만 만나서 헤어질 수 밖에 없었던 그 가족들에게 이 경험은 cathartic이 아니라 traumatic experience라고 합니다.

3. 한(恨) 에 대해서 – 1:06:00부터

“Han” boils down to the idea of collective suffering that Korean people have through history. It’s a complicated feeling of, “we are suffering and we share that pain with each other.” It’s not always negative. It can drive us to express ourselves in strong ways.

4. 계층간 갈등 

Class struggle is the theme of so many [Korean] movies, books, TV series. It’s the suffering and the struggle to move out of their condition, and that society and the upper crust of society won’t allow it. This tension is in music, it’s in movies, it’s in literature, it’s in TV shows, it’s all around. And you might say, ‘Oh, no, it’s around every country.’ Sure it is. But it’s really strong and consistent in Korean movies and literature.

🤔 이 팟캐스트를 들으면서 오늘날까지 이어진 한국의 슬픈 역사와 문화에 대해 저도 다시 생각하게 되었고, 그럼에도 불구하고 급성장할 수 있었던 세계적인 경제국가 된 한국이 존경스럽습니다.
