Before you think about your New Year’s Resolution, I want you to read this.
I was brought up in a Japanese household in the US. I spoke Japanese at home, and English at school. And now my home is Korea.
Naturally, I’ve always identified myself with both Japanese and American culture. Until yesterday.
When I was having a conversation with some of my Japanese friends, they said, “Why do you speak Japanese like that? You sound like a foreigner.”
This has dawned on me. I thought I knew how to be Japanese, but people around me didn’t think so.
For a long time, I believed that “I know how to speak and act like Japanese.” But that was not true.
If I had been wrong about how I was speaking Japanese, then what else could I have been wrong about myself?
The truth is, I don’t speak Japanese much on a daily basis. I don’t watch Japanese news or movies. It’s no surprise that I don’t “act Japanese,” but I didn’t know that until someone has pointed out to me.
The story you tell yourself
It’s easy to assume that you are a certain way because of the way you were brought up.
You tell a story about yourself. You believe that you are a certain way. But it might not be true.
What about you? What is the story you tell yourself? Have you ever thought any of these about yourself?
I cannot wake up early in the morning.
I cannot lose weight.
I’m too old. My English pronunciation won’t improve.
I’m always tired after work. I don’t have the energy to learn English or pick up a new hobby.
I’m already overwhelmed with raising kids and doing the house chores. I have no time for myself.
What if you discovered that one of these stories was not entirely true? What if you could change your story?
How an ER physician did it
Dr. Sean Kim is an emergency room physician. He only speaks Korean at work. He has a stressful job. Sometimes despite his best efforts, his patients do not live to see another day. He could have told himself that he doesn’t have the time to learn a new language. But he began learning English in his mid-30s and he has no problem communicating with foreigners now. He didn’t let his situation stop him from investing in himself.
Mikyung Kim is a motivational speaker and successful business woman (also my coaching coaching client). She always pushes herself to do more and tries something new. She organizes events and helps single-mothers. She also studies English. None of these activities help her make money. But she does them anyway. Her story is not “I’m going to be rich and relax on a beach for the rest of my life.” Her story is “I’m going to learn more and do more!”
Growing up, I thought I was just a “skinny Asian.” When I was in high school, all the popular guys played American football. And they were huge. I was skinny and played unpopular sports, soccer.
Sure, we all have different genetic makeups, but that doesn’t mean I couldn’t gain more muscle. Many years later, I worked out and got into the best shape of my life. One of my proudest moments.
I made less money last year than I did in the year before. That’s embarrassing and disappointing. But even with a few occasional setbacks, I’m going to believe that I can always grow — financially, intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. I’m also going to learn to speak Japanese more properly. The story I want to believe is that I can always grow and change.
Whatever your New Year’s resolutions is, do this first: Change the story you tell yourself.
Leave a comment below (or write me an email) and tell me about one story you’d like to change this year.
“Why do you keep saying different things?”
